Speakers for Plenary Session
Prof. Nobuyuki Yagi
Prof. Nobuyuki Yagi is Professor at the University of Tokyo. His area of study includes socio-economic aspects on small-scale fisheries as well as marketing and consumer behaviors on food products. He received his MBA (Master of Business Administration) from the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, and his PhD from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the University of Tokyo, Japan. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of IIFET (International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade) since 2014 and an expert of IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) at its group on values since 2016. He received the best academic achievement award from JIFRS (Japan International Fisheries Research Society) in 2012 and the best paper award from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science in 2014.
Prof. Yonathan Zohar
Dr. Yonathan Zohar is a Professor at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, and Chair of the Department of Marine Biotechnology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. His expertise covers the application of biotechnology in sustainable aquaculture and fisheries. The primary focus of his research is on basic and applied aspects of fish reproductive physiology and endocrinology. He uses endocrine, biochemical and molecular approaches to study interactions along the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis leading to reproductive development, gamete maturation, ovulation and spawning. His research models include commercially important farmed fish, such as seabream, seabass and salmonid species as well as the zebrafish. He builds upon his basic research to develop applied technologies for the exogenous manipulation of fish reproduction that are used in the aquaculture industry, to include induction and synchronization of spawning and generating reproductively sterile fish. Professor Zohar has published over 230 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and is the inventor of 10 issued international patents in aquaculture. He has served on many State and Federal aquaculture panels and task forces in the United States, as well as international advisory and steering committees. His work has gained world-wide recognition and he has received multiple prestigious national and international honors and awards.
Dr. Xianshi Jin
Dr. Xianshi Jin is senior fisheries biologist and general director of Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, CAFS, China. His research is focused on stock assessment, fisheries ecology and fisheries management, and has centered on long-term changes of species composition, population dynamics, stock enhancement and food web for the high trophic levels in the ecosystem of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. He is active as Principal Investigator in many national and international related programs. He received his Master of Philosophy and Dr. Sci. from University of Bergen, Norway. He currently serves on vice Chairman of PICES.
