Analysis of Power Consumption of Cloud-Radio Access Network using an M/M/c Queueing Model

Mobile network operators have developed a novel network architecture called cloud-radio access network (C-RAN) to improve network capacity and energy efficiency. Because baseband functions are centralized in C-RAN, C-RAN can achieve flexible resource allocation and reduce power consumption. Reducing the number of active processors for baseband functions can be an effective energy saving strategy, but additional power consumption caused by the processing delay must be considered. In this paper, we analyze the power consumption of C-RAN using an M/M/c queueing model and show how power consumption is changed by the number of processors through numerical results.
