Planning of Optical Networks with Sliceable Bandwidth Variable Transponders

Conventional transponders can serve only one connection or lightpath and this might lead to inefficient usage of the transponder’s resources. A new evolved type of transponder that is expected to mitigate this problem is the sliceable bandwidth variable transponder (S-BVT). An S-BVT can divide its transmission capacity into “slices” that can be allocated to different lightpaths independently and thus, it can support more than one connections at the same time. In this paper, we provide an integer linear programming (ILP) model that minimizes the cost of an optical network where S-BVTs are employed.
