Combination of Substrate Integrated Waveguide and Microstrip Structure for Controllable Wideband Bandpass Filters

This paper proposes a combination of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) and microstip structure for controllable wideband bandpass filter (WBPF). In order to control the bandwidth on BPF, the SIW with highpass filter (HPF) characteristic is used to define the lower cutoff frequency. Then, the upper cutoff frequency is given by the conventional lowpass filter design of microstrip structure. For the concept investigation, three WBPFs with different frequency ranges of 2-5, 3-5, and 4-5 GHz have been achieved, resulting in fractional bandwidths of 80%, 50% and 20%, respectively. In practical aspect, the WBPF structure of 4-5 GHz is designed and fabricated on low cost FR4-substrate. The results show that measured and simulated results are agreed well in the reflection and insertion responses.
