Performance Improvement of Optical Networks with Waveband Virtual Links

A novel optical network architecture was proposed that uses waveband virtual links, each of which can carry several optical paths, to directly bridge distant node pairs. This architecture integrates coarse granular routing on virtual links for impairment mitigation and conventional path granular routing and add/drop for attaining enhanced flexibility in routing. In this paper, we verify the performance of the proposed network architecture using a real network topology. Numerical experiments shows that the proposed network needs 21% fewer optical fibers to accommodate a given path demand compared with a conventional optical path network.
