Higher Order Modulation to Aperiodic Channel State Information Report without Uplink Data for Carrier Aggregation with up to 32 Carriers

In Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) Release 13 (Rel-13), Carrier Aggregation (CA) extension to support up to 32 Component Carriers (CCs) was mainly motivated by the usage of Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA) operation in 5 GHz (e.g. up to 160 MHz operation in 5 GHz band) for higher peak data rate. In order to support the CA with 32 CCs, both DL and UL control signaling need to be enhanced. One such aspect is Aperiodic Channel State Information (A-CSI) reporting without UL data , where the limitation of QPSK modulation for A-CSI only transmission will result in considerable UL overhead when aggregating a large number of DL carriers. To address this issue, 3 methods are proposed to apply higher-order modulation (HOM) for A-CSI transmission without UL data. The numerical simulation results are provided to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
