Enhancing 4x4 MIMO Channel Capacity by Dual Polarized Directional Antenna

The demand for higher capacity data in indoor communication system is growing as wireless access always congested due to high amount of users. Thus, regardless the antenna design, improvement in channel capacity will always be an important goal in a research. The use of directional antenna and polarization diversity technique can improved the capacity as discussed in [1] where 2x2 MIMO was assumed. This paper presents channel capacity calculations for a low profile directional antenna with dual polarization [2], assuming 4x4 MIMO system. The capacity enhancement is shown by comparison to dipole antenna and the calculation was done at 3.5 GHz.
