Effect of Corona on Insulator Voltages for Direct Lightning Strike to a Phase Conductor: FDTD Calculations

In this paper, we apply the simplified model of corona discharge to the analysis of insulators voltages of a 40-m tower for the case of direct lightning strikes to an upper phase conductor, at the midpoint of the span (shielding failure). Corona is assumed to occur only around the conductor struck by lightning. On the basis of the computed results, the effect of corona on insulator voltages is examined.
