Evaluation of kNN Query Processing on HBase Using GeoHash

The rapid improvement of GPS-enabled devices has resulted in the explosion of spatial data generated recently. High performance processing of spatial queries such as kNN query on massive volume of data requires a scalable and efficient database such as HBase, a non-relational database leveraging the HDFS. However, in HBase, queries are processed mainly in HMaster, region servers only scan data inside regions then send back to HMaster. It leads to I/O bottleneck between HMaster and region servers, and workload overload on HMaster. We applied divide-and-conquer approach for processing kNN query in parallel on HBase to solve these problems.
