Experiments of WLAN Link Performance Using Helicopter / Balloon Systems

Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are low-cost low-risk candidates for special ad hoc network. In [1], an emergency networking architecture based on the electric vehicles (EV) incorporating with unmanned mini electric helicopters (EH) was proposed for monitoring, information collection and data delivering in disaster recovery. In such a multi-UAV ad hoc network, a key enabler is the ability of the UAV nodes to exchange packets with each other and with ground stations. Especially when the radio link is connected between two flying EHs, the packets delivery will be limited by both the distance and the attitude of helicopters.
In this paper, the WLAN link was investigated in the UAVs links of EH-to-EH (inter-EH) and balloon-to-balloon (inter-BL) propagation conditions. The single WLAN link throughput, RSS and the PDR was compared between inter-EH, inter-BL and inter-EHs with single antenna server node and 2-antenna diversity server node.
