Investigation of Enhanced Discontinuous Transmission for Small Cell Environment in LTE-Advanced System

In Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) Release 12 (Rel-12), small cell enhancement (SCE) is being intensively discussed since it could substantially provide capacity boosting. In small cell environment, interference coordination is very important to exploit the performance gain, especially in dense deployment where the interference among small cells is severe. Discontinuous transmission (DTX), which enables small cells temporarily be off, could be a simple and effective solution for interference cancellation. Differ from conventional DTX scheme which select cells with lowest traffic load to be off, the proposed smart DTX schemes in this paper select DTX cells jointly considering maximizing benefits and minimizing the harm of DTX. Through system level evaluation, proposed methods achieves large throughput and efficiency gain compared to conventional method.
