Radio Frequency Fingerprint Construction for Inter-frequency Small Cell Discovery in LTE-Advanced Heterogeneous Networks

Deployment of small cells using a high carrier frequency over the traditional macro cells is an attractive solution for network operators to enable users to offload from macro to small cells. User equipment (UE) needs to discover both macro and small cells to realize such a solution. However, frequent inter-frequency search causes large UE battery power consumption, which makes the study of small cell discovery techniques important. Both network-centric and UE-assisted centric schemes are proposed for facilitating small cell discovery in LTE-Advanced networks. One possible solution is based on radio frequency (RF) fingerprint, which has been discussed in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). However, methods how to develop a database for RF fingerprint have not been studied yet. Here, we study a method of developing RF fingerprint database and evaluate the successful discovery ratio of small cells for a variety of information in fingerprint database.
