Channel Frequency Response Based Adaptive Modulation and Coding in OFDM Broadband Systems

For OFDM transmission, Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) selects a common modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for all subcarriers in a frame by comparing the frequency-averaged SNR of all the subcarriers to the minimum required threshold SNR for a target FER. As channel decoder is able to derive code diversity in frequency domain of the multipath channels, it is mentioned in previous research that sample variance of channel gains in a frame has a strong relation to the threshold SNR. However, the relation between the variance and the threshold SNR is inconsistent. In this study, we propose a novel normalized variance which has a consistent relation with the threshold SNR and evaluate throughput performance of AMC based on the proposed normalized variance and frequency-averaged SNR.
